Louis Riel Day

Louis Riel Day

Monday, February 17th, 2025

In 2007, Manitoba's provincial government voted to recognize Louis Riel Day as a provincial holiday, observed on the third Monday of February.

Louis Riel's legacy is significant in both Canadian and Métis history. His leadership during the Red River and North-West Rebellions marked pivotal moments in the struggle for Métis rights and their place within the broader Canadian confederation. His efforts are often recognized for their impact on the political, cultural, and social dynamics of both Métis and Indigenous communities.

Riel's role as a founder of Manitoba and his push for the inclusion of Métis rights in the province’s formation are key elements in understanding his contributions to Canadian history. Though he was controversial in his time, his legacy has undergone a transformation, with a growing recognition of his role as a symbol of resistance against oppression and a champion of minority rights.

The naming of streets, schools, and institutions after him, like the Esplanade Riel bridge and the Louis Riel School Division, reflects his continued importance in the collective memory of Manitobans and Canadians at large.

"In a little while it will be over. We may fail. But the rights for which we contend will not die."

-Louis Riel
