West Nile Virus - Mosquito Fogging Notice

PUBLIC NOTICE

West Nile Mosquito Fogging: 

Friday, July 31 & Monday, August 3 at 9:30 PM

The Town of Stonewall advises residents that the Province of Manitoba has issued a health order to fog for mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus because these mosquito populations have reached levels that warrant control measures.  Fogging for the entire Town with a 3km buffer is estimated to take 4 to 5 hours.

During Mosquito Fogging, Residents Should:

  • Remain indoors whenever possible while fogging is taking place in your area.
  • Close doors and windows to prevent fog from entering your home.
  • Turn off window air conditioners, fans, and ventilation systems that draw outside air into your home during fogging operations.
  • Bring children’s toys, pet dishes, and outdoor items inside or wash them thoroughly after fogging if they remain outdoors.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during and immediately after fogging in treated areas.
  • Keep pets indoors during fogging whenever possible. If pets are outside, ensure they are away from the fogging equipment.
  • Protect sensitive individuals, including those with asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions, by remaining indoors and keeping windows closed during the treatment period.
  • Wash homegrown fruits and vegetables before consuming them, as recommended for all fresh produce.

Fogging operations are planned for July 31 & August 3 at 9:30PM

NOTE: Mosquito spraying will take place in the evening or overnight, weather conditions permitting. Up to date information on adult mosquito control schedules for West Nile virus and a description of the areas to be sprayed can be found on the Provincial website HERE.

Additionally, residents are encouraged to continue taking preventative measures by:

  • Removing standing water from their property.
  • Maintaining eavestroughs, birdbaths, and containers that collect water.
  • Ensure that rain barrels are covered with a fine screen and tightly sealed around the downspout.
  • Wearing insect repellent when outdoors.
  • Making sure your doors and window screens fit tightly and are free of holes.
  • Using screens on windows and doors.
  • Wearing light coloured, loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves and pant legs while outdoors.
  • Reducing time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.
  • Keeping grass mowed and vegetation trimmed around high use areas (ex: doorways & seating areas).
